Organic Apple & Blueberry Instant Oatmeal Mix

This Quaker instant oatmeal mix is actually quite clean - no seed oils present! However, it contains refined sugar, artificial natural flavoring, and non-organic ingredients. Our DIY version uses real freeze-dried fruit pieces instead of artificial flavoring, organic coconut sugar instead of refined sugar, and organic oats for superior nutrition.

Based on: Apple & Blueberry Flavour · Makes approximately 30 servings · Serving: 45g (about 1/2 cup dry mix)

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free

Commercial Apple & Blueberry Flavour from Quaker often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.

The original Apple & Blueberry Flavour may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.

Instructions

Step 1. Measure 900g (10 cups) Bob's Red Mill organic rolled oats into a large mixing bowl. These provide the protein and fiber base - choose old-fashioned oats rather than quick-cooking for better texture and nutrition retention.
Step 2. Add 200g (2 cups) Organic Valley whole milk powder to the oats. Whisk thoroughly for 2-3 minutes to distribute evenly - milk powder tends to clump, so take time to break up any chunks with the whisk or your fingers. The whole milk powder provides more nutrition than the skimmed version in the commercial product.
Step 3. Measure 120g (1/2 cup) Wholesome organic coconut sugar and add to the mixture. This natural sweetener has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar and adds subtle caramel notes. Whisk again for 1-2 minutes to distribute.
Step 4. Add 35g (1/2 cup) Natierra freeze-dried apple pieces and 25g (1/3 cup) freeze-dried blueberries. These provide authentic fruit flavor without artificial additives. Gently fold them in with a large spoon to avoid crushing the delicate fruit pieces.
Step 5. Sprinkle in 6g (1 teaspoon) Redmond Real Salt and 4g (1 teaspoon) Frontier organic vanilla powder. Mix gently but thoroughly - the salt enhances all the flavors while the vanilla adds depth. Do a final gentle stir to ensure even distribution throughout the batch.
Step 6. Transfer the completed mix to airtight glass jars or containers. Label with the date and contents. To prepare: combine 45g (1/2 cup) dry mix with 180ml (3/4 cup) boiling water, stir well, let sit 2-3 minutes for the oats to soften and fruit to rehydrate. The mixture will be ready when the fruit pieces have plumped up and the oats are creamy.
Step 7. Storage tip: Keep in airtight containers in a cool, dry pantry. The freeze-dried fruit and milk powder make this shelf-stable for 6-8 months. For best fruit flavor, use within 4 months. If you live in a humid climate, consider adding a small packet of food-grade silica gel to each container to maintain crispness.

Storage

Store in airtight glass containers in a cool, dry pantry for 6-8 months. Use within 4 months for peak fruit flavor. Keep away from heat and humidity to prevent clumping.
