Oatly Barista Edition contains rapeseed oil (canola oil), a inflammatory seed oil that must be eliminated. This DIY version replaces it with refined coconut oil for neutral taste and superior frothing properties, while using organic ingredients and eliminating synthetic additives.

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free
Commercial Barista edition oat drink from Oatly! often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.
The original Barista edition oat drink may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.
Ingredients
Organic rolled oats
300g (about 3 cups) · Bob's Red Mill Organic Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
Primary base providing creamy texture, natural sweetness, and characteristic oat flavor
Filtered water
3.2 liters (13.5 cups) · High-quality filtered or spring water
Solvent for extraction and final volume adjustment after straining
Step 1. Soak the oats: Place 300g organic rolled oats in a large bowl with 1 liter of filtered water. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes minimum, or up to 2 hours. This softens the oats for better blending and reduces the need for straining. Do not over-soak (more than 4 hours) as this can create a slimy texture.
Step 2. Prepare the coconut oil: If your coconut oil is solid, gently warm 90g (6 tablespoons) in a small saucepan over low heat until just melted, about 2-3 minutes. Do not overheat. Allow to cool to room temperature but remain liquid. This ensures smooth incorporation without shocking the cold mixture.
Step 3. Blend the mixture: Drain and rinse the soaked oats thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Add the rinsed oats to a high-speed blender with 2.5 liters of fresh filtered water. Blend on high speed for 60-90 seconds until completely smooth and creamy. Add the melted coconut oil, 3.6g sea salt, 3g calcium carbonate, 1g cream of tartar, and 0.5g kelp powder. Blend for another 30 seconds to fully incorporate all ingredients.
Step 4. Strain for smoothness: Pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or nut milk bag into a large pitcher. Press the pulp gently with the back of a spoon to extract liquid, but don't force it - over-pressing creates grittiness. For ultra-smooth barista quality, strain twice through increasingly fine mesh.
Step 5. Adjust consistency and taste: Add the remaining 700ml filtered water gradually while stirring, tasting after each addition. The final consistency should coat a spoon lightly but pour smoothly. Taste and adjust salt if needed - it should be barely perceptible but enhance the oat flavor. If too thin, blend a small amount of the strained pulp back in.
Step 6. Final processing and storage: Transfer to clean glass bottles or containers, leaving 1 inch headspace for expansion. The mixture will naturally separate - this is normal. Store in refrigerator for up to 5 days. Always shake vigorously before each use, especially for barista applications where frothing is important.
Step 7. Usage instructions: Shake container thoroughly before each use. For coffee drinks, use the same ratio as dairy milk. For optimal barista frothing, ensure the milk is cold (35-40°F) and use the steam wand technique appropriate for plant milks - slightly longer steaming time and gentler pressure than dairy milk. Use 100ml per serving to match commercial nutrition profile.
Storage
Refrigerate immediately and use within 5 days. Natural separation is normal - shake before use. Do not freeze as this affects texture. Store in glass containers for best flavor preservation.

Significant upfront investment in bulk organic ingredients, but massive long-term savings. The 25-lb oat bag alone makes over 12 batches. After initial purchase, subsequent batches cost only about $0.75 each since you'll have mineral supplies for months.
