Organic Gourmet Popping Corn

Orville Redenbacher's Original Gourmet Popping Corn is simply whole grain popping corn with no additives - already clean! The DIY advantage is sourcing certified organic, non-GMO kernels and avoiding potential pesticide residues from conventional farming.

Based on: Original Gourmet Popping Corn · Makes approximately 30 servings (1.2 kg batch) · Serving: 7.5 cups popped (40g raw kernels)

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free

Commercial Original Gourmet Popping Corn from Orville Redenbacher's often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.

The original Original Gourmet Popping Corn may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.

Ingredients

Organic whole grain popping corn
1.2kg (about 6 cups raw kernels) · Bob's Red Mill Organic Popping Corn
The sole ingredient - these are specially selected corn varieties that pop into fluffy, tender kernels when heated

Instructions

Step 1. Store your organic popping corn in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Proper moisture content (13-14%) is critical for good popping - kernels that are too dry will not pop well. If kernels seem stale, you can revive them by adding 1 tablespoon of water to 1 cup of kernels, sealing in a jar, and letting sit for 2-3 days.
Step 2. For stovetop popping (seed oil-free method): Heat 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil or ghee in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add 3-4 test kernels and cover. When they pop, the oil is ready. Add 1/3 cup (40g) of kernels in a single layer, cover, and shake the pot every 30 seconds. Listen for popping to slow to 2-3 seconds between pops, then remove from heat immediately. This yields exactly 7.5 cups popped.
Step 3. For air popping: Use a hot air popper according to manufacturer instructions with 1/3 cup (40g) kernels. No oil needed during popping. After popping, drizzle with 1-2 teaspoons melted grass-fed butter or ghee for flavor if desired.
Step 4. For oven popping: Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss 1/3 cup kernels with 1 tablespoon avocado oil in an oven-safe pot with tight-fitting lid. Cover and bake 15-20 minutes until popping slows. This method works but is less efficient than stovetop.
Step 5. Seasoning options (all seed oil-free): Immediately after popping, while kernels are still warm, add sea salt, nutritional yeast, dried herbs, or a light drizzle of grass-fed butter. The residual heat helps seasonings adhere without additional oils.
Step 6. Store popped corn in an airtight container for up to 1 week. For best texture, consume within 2-3 days. Raw kernels stored properly will maintain popping quality for 2-3 years.

Storage

Raw kernels: airtight container, cool dry place, 2-3 years shelf life. Popped corn: airtight container, consume within 1 week for best texture.
