Fairlife's Chocolate Nutrition Shake is a high-protein, low-carb drink that contains artificial sweeteners (acesulfame potassium) and processed additives (cellulose gums, carrageenan). Good news - it contains no seed oils. This DIY version eliminates all artificial ingredients and uses organic grass-fed milk, clean protein powder, and natural monk fruit sweetener.

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free
Commercial Chocolate Nutrition Shake from fairlife often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.
The original Chocolate Nutrition Shake may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.
Ingredients

Provides the creamy base, natural proteins, and essential nutrients including calcium and B vitamins
Organic milk protein powder
285g (about 19 scoops) · NOW Foods Organic Milk Protein Isolate
Boosts protein content to match the commercial version's 30g per serving without artificial additives

Organic xanthan gum (optional)
3g (1/2 teaspoon) · Bob's Red Mill Organic Xanthan Gum
Clean thickening agent to replace cellulose gel/gum - use sparingly as too much creates unpleasant texture
Instructions
Step 1. In a large blender or food processor, combine 1 cup (240ml) of the organic milk with the organic milk protein powder (285g total for the batch, which is about 19g per serving). Blend on high speed for 60-90 seconds until completely smooth with no powder clumps. This pre-blending step is crucial because protein powder can create a gritty texture if not properly incorporated first.
Step 2. Add the organic cocoa powder (90g total, about 6g per serving) to the milk-protein mixture. Blend again for 30-45 seconds until the cocoa is fully dissolved and the mixture is uniformly chocolate-colored. Scrape down the sides of the blender halfway through to ensure even mixing.
Step 3. Dissolve the monk fruit sweetener (30g total, about 2g per serving) in 1/4 cup of warm milk first, then add to the blender along with the vanilla extract (1 tablespoon total) and sea salt (1 teaspoon total). Warm milk helps the monk fruit dissolve completely, preventing any crystalline texture in the final product.
Step 4. If using xanthan gum for thickness (optional but recommended for commercial-like texture), sprinkle it very slowly into the blender while running on low speed - never dump it in all at once or it will create impossible-to-blend clumps. Use just 3g (1/2 teaspoon) for the entire batch, as xanthan gum is extremely powerful.
Step 5. Add the remaining milk (about 4.5 cups) gradually while blending on medium speed. Blend for a final 2-3 minutes until completely smooth and frothy. The mixture should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon but still pourable.
Step 6. Taste and adjust: if you prefer sweeter, add more monk fruit 1/2 teaspoon at a time. If too thick, add milk 2 tablespoons at a time. If chocolate flavor needs boosting, add more cocoa powder 1 teaspoon at a time. Remember that flavors will meld and intensify during storage.
Step 7. Pour into clean glass mason jars or BPA-free bottles, leaving about 1 inch of headspace. Shake vigorously before each use as natural separation will occur - this is normal and healthy, unlike commercial versions with synthetic emulsifiers.
Step 8. Serve chilled. Each serving should be 340g (about 1.4 cups). Store in refrigerator for up to 5 days maximum - without preservatives, this won't last as long as commercial versions but tastes significantly fresher. Always smell before drinking and discard if any off-odors develop.
Storage
Refrigerate immediately after preparation. Shake well before each serving as natural separation occurs. Use within 5 days. Freeze individual portions in ice cube trays for smoothie additions, but texture changes after freezing so best consumed fresh.
