Organic Rainbow Fruit Gummy Snacks

Welch's Mixed Fruit Snacks are essentially gummy candies made primarily from corn syrup, sugar, and artificial additives including Red 40 and Blue 1 dyes. The commercial version contains 11g of added sugars per serving and relies on artificial flavors and preservatives. A homemade organic version eliminates all artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives while providing real fruit nutrition and significantly better ingredient quality.

Based on: Welch's Fruit Snacks Mixed Fruit · Makes approximately 36 servings (equivalent to 36 commercial pouches) · Serving: 25g (about 4-5 small gummies)

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free

Commercial Welch's Fruit Snacks Mixed Fruit from Welch's often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.

Instructions

Step 1. Prepare your workspace by lining a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper and lightly oiling with coconut oil. Set out 3 small mixing bowls for creating different colored batches. Measure all ingredients precisely using a kitchen scale for best results - gelatin is particularly sensitive to ratios and too much will create tough gummies while too little won't set properly.
Step 2. In a small saucepan, combine 180ml (3/4 cup) of filtered water with the organic citric acid (3g) and whisk until dissolved. Add the mixed berry fruit spread (240g) and heat over medium-low heat, stirring constantly for 3-4 minutes until the mixture is smooth and just begins to simmer. The fruit spread will break down and create a uniform base - avoid boiling as this can break down the natural fruit acids.
Step 3. Remove from heat and whisk in the honey (120g) and coconut sugar (60g) until completely dissolved. The mixture should be warm but not hot - around 140-150°F is ideal. If too hot, the gelatin will not set properly. Let cool for 2-3 minutes while you prepare the gelatin.
Step 4. Sprinkle the gelatin powder (85g) evenly over 120ml (1/2 cup) of cold filtered water in a large mixing bowl. Let bloom for 3-4 minutes until the gelatin absorbs the water and becomes spongy. This blooming step is critical - rushed gelatin will create lumpy gummies. Whisk the bloomed gelatin thoroughly to break up any clumps.
Step 5. Slowly pour the warm fruit mixture into the bloomed gelatin while whisking continuously. Mix for 2-3 minutes until completely smooth and no gelatin streaks remain. The mixture should have a glossy, uniform appearance. If lumps persist, strain through a fine mesh sieve.
Step 6. Divide the mixture evenly between your 3 prepared bowls (about 200ml each). Add colorings: beet powder (2g) to one bowl for red, spirulina powder (1g) to another for blue, and turmeric powder (1g) to the third for yellow/orange. Whisk each bowl for 30-45 seconds until colors are evenly distributed. Work quickly as the mixture will begin to set within 5-7 minutes.
Step 7. Pour each colored mixture into your prepared baking dish in sections or create marbled patterns by spooning different colors together. Alternatively, use silicone gummy molds for individual pieces. Tap the dish gently on the counter to release air bubbles. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours until completely firm to the touch.
Step 8. Once set, use a sharp knife to cut into 1-inch squares or remove from molds. Store in an airtight glass container with parchment paper between layers. These keep for up to 1 week refrigerated or 3 days at room temperature. For longer storage, freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Serve at room temperature for best texture - cold gummies can be quite firm.

Storage

Store in airtight containers with parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. Refrigerate for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. Keep away from heat and humidity which can cause melting. No preservatives means shorter shelf life than commercial versions, but superior ingredient quality.

Cost Comparison

Cost per serving (homemade)$0.235
Cost per serving (store-bought)$0.182
Savings-29%

The DIY version costs more per serving initially, but you're paying for dramatically higher ingredient quality - organic, grass-fed gelatin, real fruit purees, raw honey, and zero artificial additives. The upfront investment in bulk organic ingredients pays off over multiple batches, and the nutritional and health value significantly exceeds the commercial version.
