Ingredients
Fresh organic navel oranges
5-6 pounds (approximately 16-20 medium oranges) · Organic navel oranges from Whole Foods or local organic grocer
Primary ingredient providing natural sugars, vitamin C, and authentic orange flavor without processing chemicals
Instructions
Step 1. Wash the organic oranges thoroughly under cold running water, scrubbing the skin gently to remove any surface residue. Pat dry with a clean towel. Room temperature oranges yield more juice, so let refrigerated oranges sit for 30-60 minutes before juicing.
Step 2. Roll each orange firmly on the counter while applying pressure with your palm for 15-20 seconds. This breaks down the internal membranes and increases juice yield by approximately 20-30%. Cut each orange in half crosswise (not lengthwise) to expose maximum surface area for juicing.
Step 3. Using a manual citrus juicer, electric juicer, or reamer, extract juice from each orange half. Apply firm, steady pressure and twist if using a manual juicer. For electric juicers, process oranges according to manufacturer instructions. You should yield approximately 2-3 ounces of juice per medium orange (about 4 oranges per 8oz serving).
Step 4. Strain the fresh juice through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth-lined strainer to remove all pulp. For ultra-smooth juice matching the commercial product, strain twice - first through a coarse strainer to catch large pulp pieces, then through a fine-mesh strainer. Press the pulp gently with a spoon to extract additional juice, but don't force it through the strainer.
Step 5. If not consuming immediately, transfer the strained juice to sterilized glass containers, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Fresh juice contains natural enzymes and lacks preservatives, so it will separate and oxidize faster than commercial juice. Stir before serving as separation is natural.
Step 6. Store in refrigerator at 40°F or below for maximum 3-4 days. The juice is best consumed within 24-48 hours for optimal flavor and nutritional value. For longer storage, freeze in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Shake or stir before serving as natural separation occurs.
Storage
Refrigerate immediately after preparation. Consume within 3-4 days. Natural separation and slight color change is normal - stir before drinking. Freeze for longer storage up to 3 months.

While the per-serving cost is competitive, the main value is in ingredient quality and freshness. Organic oranges cost more upfront but provide superior nutrition, no pasteurization, and no industrial processing. Bulk buying and seasonal pricing can improve economics significantly.
