Organic Baby Oat Cereal (First Foods)

Gerber's baby oat cereal is a simple, clean product with whole grain oat flour fortified with synthetic vitamins and minerals. Fortunately, it contains no seed oils. The DIY version uses organic oat flour with nutritional yeast for natural B vitamins, creating a cleaner alternative without synthetic additives.

Based on: Oatmeal Single Grain Cereal (Supported Sitter) · Makes approximately 45 servings · Serving: 15g (about 2 tablespoons)

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free

Commercial Oatmeal Single Grain Cereal (Supported Sitter) from Gerber often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.

The original Oatmeal Single Grain Cereal (Supported Sitter) may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.

Ingredients

Organic oat flour
650g (about 5.5 cups) · Bob's Red Mill Organic Oat Flour
Primary carbohydrate and fiber source, provides gentle nutrition for developing digestive systems
Nutritional yeast
20g (about 3 tablespoons) · Bragg Premium Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
Natural source of B vitamins including B12, folate, and niacin to replace synthetic vitamin fortification
Organic coconut flour
30g (about 4 tablespoons) · Anthony's Organic Coconut Flour
Adds natural minerals including potassium and magnesium while maintaining smooth texture

Instructions

Step 1. Measure 650g (5.5 cups) of organic oat flour into a large mixing bowl. Sift through a fine mesh strainer to remove any larger pieces that could be choking hazards - baby cereals must be completely smooth and fine.
Step 2. Add 20g (3 tablespoons) of nutritional yeast to the sifted oat flour. Nutritional yeast provides natural B vitamins but has a slightly savory flavor, so use sparingly. Whisk thoroughly for 2-3 minutes to ensure even distribution throughout the flour.
Step 3. Incorporate 30g (4 tablespoons) of organic coconut flour, whisking continuously to prevent clumping. The coconut flour adds natural minerals and a subtle sweetness that babies enjoy, plus it helps with texture.
Step 4. Sift the entire mixture through a fine mesh strainer two more times, whisking between each sifting. This ensures the cereal will be completely smooth when mixed with liquid - any grittiness could be problematic for babies just learning to eat solids.
Step 5. Store the dry cereal mix in an airtight glass container in a cool, dry place. Label with the date and contents. The mixture will stay fresh for up to 6 months when stored properly.
Step 6. To prepare each serving: Measure 15g (2 tablespoons) of the dry mix into a small bowl. Gradually whisk in 45-60ml (3-4 tablespoons) of warm breast milk, formula, or organic whole milk until smooth. Start with less liquid for a thicker consistency, add more for thinner. The texture should be smooth and easy to swallow.
Step 7. Test the temperature on your wrist before serving - it should be lukewarm, never hot. Serve immediately after mixing. Never save leftover prepared cereal as bacteria can grow rapidly in the milk mixture.
Step 8. Start with very small amounts (1-2 teaspoons) when introducing to babies around 4-6 months. Gradually increase portion size as baby's appetite and tolerance develops. Always supervise feeding and watch for any signs of allergic reaction.

Storage

Store dry mix in airtight container for up to 6 months. Prepare individual servings fresh each time - never store prepared cereal with liquid added. Keep in cool, dry pantry away from direct sunlight.
