Organic Grass-Fed Chocolate Protein Powder

Premier Protein's chocolate milkshake powder contains artificial sweeteners (acesulfame potassium, sucralose) and artificial flavors that can disrupt gut health and taste preferences. The good news is it contains no seed oils - sunflower lecithin is not a problematic oil. This DIY version uses only organic, whole food ingredients while delivering the same 30g protein per serving.

Based on: Chocolate Milkshake · Makes approximately 30 servings · Serving: 2 scoops (41g) - same as commercial product

Why This Recipe is Seed Oil Free

Commercial Chocolate Milkshake from premier protein often contains inflammatory seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil. This homemade version replaces them with healthier fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, or avocado oil — giving you the same great taste without the processed oils.

The original Chocolate Milkshake may also contain artificial dyes. Check it on DyeFreeCheck to find out.

Instructions

Step 1. Prepare your workspace by ensuring all measuring tools are completely dry, as moisture can cause protein powder to clump. Use a kitchen scale for accuracy - volume measurements can vary significantly with protein powders. Start by measuring 1050g (about 8.5 cups) of the Anthony's Organic Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate into a large mixing bowl. This forms the base of your protein blend and should be the largest component by far.
Step 2. Add 120g (about 1 cup) of Anthony's Organic Cocoa Powder to the protein base. The Dutch-processed cocoa provides superior mixing properties compared to natural cocoa. Whisk these two ingredients together thoroughly for 2-3 minutes - protein and cocoa powders have different densities and tend to separate if not properly integrated. Use a balloon whisk and scrape the sides frequently to ensure even distribution.
Step 3. Measure 30g (about 2.5 tablespoons) of Anthony's Organic Erythritol and add it to the mixture. Erythritol crystals are larger than other sweetener particles, so they need extra attention to distribute evenly. Whisk for another 2 minutes, breaking up any clumps with the back of a spoon. The sweetness level will be similar to the commercial version but without blood sugar spikes.
Step 4. Add 15g (about 1 tablespoon) of Frontier Co-op Organic Vanilla Powder and 10g (about 2 teaspoons) of Bob's Red Mill Organic Xanthan Gum. These fine powders can create dust clouds, so add them slowly while whisking continuously. The xanthan gum is crucial for preventing separation when the powder is mixed with liquids later, but too much will create a gummy texture.
Step 5. Finish by adding 5g (about 1 teaspoon) of Redmond Real Salt and conducting a final thorough mixing session. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse 10-15 times to break up any remaining clumps and create a uniform texture. Do not over-process, as this can generate heat and damage the protein structure. The final powder should be smooth and free-flowing.
Step 6. Storage and usage: Transfer the finished powder to an airtight glass container or vacuum-sealed bags in 500g portions. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. To use, mix 41g (about 2 scoops using a standard protein scoop) with 8-12oz of cold water, milk, or plant milk. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds or blend for best results. The powder will provide 30g protein per serving, matching the commercial version exactly.

Storage

Store in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Shelf life is 18-24 months when properly stored. Avoid moisture exposure which can cause clumping and protein degradation.

Cost Comparison

Cost per serving (homemade)$0.62
Cost per serving (store-bought)$1.25
Savings50%

Initial investment is higher due to bulk organic ingredients, but cost per serving drops dramatically. The vanilla powder is the most expensive component per batch but provides superior flavor compared to artificial alternatives. Long-term savings are substantial while eliminating artificial additives.
